AI Policy

This policy refers to the guidelines outlined by STM (Recommendations for classifying AI use) and WAME (Chatbots, generative AI, and scholarly manuscripts). Philology: Journal Of English Language and Literature recognizes the potential of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist authors in refining their writing, particularly for those writing in a second language. However, due to risks regarding inaccuracy, bias, lack of attribution, and confidentiality issues, human oversight and transparency must inform every stage of the research process.

For Authors

  • Usage & Responsibility: Authors may use generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) solely for specific tasks such as enhancing grammar, language, readability, or brainstorming ideas. The generation of text, code, or data without rigorous revision is strictly prohibited. Authors remain fully responsible for the originality, validity, and integrity of their submissions.
  • No Authorship: Generative AI tools cannot be credited as authors or co-authors, as they lack the legal and human accountability required for publication agreements.
  • Disclosure: Authors must clearly acknowledge the use of generative AI tools in their articles by including a detailed statement (specifying the tool's name, version, and purpose) within the Methods or Acknowledgments section.
  • Images and Data: The use of generative AI in creating or manipulating images, figures, charts, and original research data is strictly prohibited.

For Editors and Peer Reviewers

  • Confidentiality: To protect intellectual property and data privacy, editors and peer reviewers are strictly prohibited from uploading unpublished manuscripts, files, images, or metadata into generative AI tools.
  • Review Process: Peer reviewers must evaluate the articles using their own subject-matter expertise. They are forbidden from utilizing AI tools to write, evaluate, or condense submitted manuscripts. AI may only be employed to assist in improving the language of the final review report.
