Mathematical proof is a fundamental competence in the Algebraic Structures course, requiring strong conceptual understanding and deductive reasoning skills. However, observations during the Field Work Practice (KKL) at STKIP Budidaya Binjai indicate that many students still experience difficulties in constructing valid and systematic mathematical proofs. This study aims to analyze the types of difficulties and their underlying factors in students’ mathematical proof processes in the Algebraic Structures course. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving undergraduate students of the Mathematics Education study program as research participants. Data were collected through mathematical proof tests, classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The results reveal that students’ difficulties include misunderstanding fundamental definitions and properties of algebraic structures, inability to connect prerequisite concepts with statements to be proven, inappropriate selection of proof strategies, and weaknesses in organizing logical and formal proof arguments. These difficulties are mainly caused by limited conceptual understanding and insufficient experience in proof-oriented learning activities. The findings suggest the need for instructional strategies that emphasize conceptual understanding and systematic proof practice to enhance students’ mathematical proof abilities in algebra-related courses.
